The History

Dawn dolls in general were made by The Topper Corp in the very early 1970's and were only produced for about 3 years.  Dale was one of those first produced.

...Dale is a unique example of the Topper Dawn Dolls.  She alone holds the honor of being the only black female doll and was issued with the largest variety of head molds that any other Dawn.  Thus, she is truly an exception.

1)  I bought my first Dale doll off eBay back in 1998.  Over the course of the years since, I have collected 14 Dale dolls.  Each of them has a different head mold number, and each a different look.  I find this very fascinating!

2 & 3)  My next 2 Dales were bought at the same time by my husband who bought them from a fellow collector that happened to buy some Dawn dolls.  He didn't even get to see them because it was a deal done over the phone and across the country.  I ended up getting one of my most beautiful Dales and my first green eyed one with a more "creamy" color (not as dark as most Dales).  I also got my "Striped Swinger" and the red version of Dawn's classic mini.

4)  This Dale, which I believe was the next one, we found at a flea market.  She is so cool, or should I say, KEEN!

5)  I bought this one off eBay quite some time ago, and I even remember who I bought it from.  She was the very first (Dawn seller) that I remember to shill bid on her items with as many as 3-4 user names.  She also outbid many people on eBay and turned around and put them right back on auction for higher prices - all the time pretending to be a collector as well as pretending to be as many as 4 different people from herself, her mother, or her sister... to her boyfriend.  I am sure that I need not name names because you veteran Dawn eBayers will know exactly who I am talking about!!!!!

6)  Back to better things.... This Dale I obtained in a collection that we bought years ago.  My sweet husband kept in touch with the owner for 3 years and finally bought it for me for my birthday that year!

7)  Sometimes people contact me about buying Dawns because they saw my collector site.  That is how this pretty Dale made it into my collection.

8)  Another person contacted me because of my web site, and we bought this poor girl.  She had some scratches on her body, no eyelashes and such a bad hair do, but a nice face and green eyes - so I figured that she was worth the work.  I took her hair out again, and she is presently waiting for new eyebrows, eyelashes, and a new reroot.

9)  Trading can be cool too!  I didn't have to put out any cash for this groovy chic.

10)  When this Dale arrived, I was so pleased to find that she DID have green eyes!  I bought her off eBay and couldn't tell for sure from the picture.

11)  Having Dawn friends is great.  Not only do you have something really cool in common, but you can help each other find items you don't have.   A dear friend of mine gave me this Dancing Dale as a present.

12, 13, & 14)  Well... it was back to eBay for these latest additions to my collection.

I hope you had fun reading this,

Heidi
