Dawn
and her HEADS
Updated 11-04-00
NOTE: The results of this study are my own observations. If you have a different variety of head mold, or can offer your own observations, I'd love to include any information you can provide. Send email to jodib@toppertowers.com
*None of the dolls in the photos have been restored or altered in any way.

Mold number 11A appears to be the least common of Dawn's many faces. It is very similar to K11A. Hypothesis on factory location cannot be determined at this time. |

Mold number A11A has an oval shaped face and this mold type usually has vivid paint color with rose colored lips. The rooted hair is slightly thick. A11A's may have either Taiwan or Hong Kong bodies. This mold has been found in hard vinyl (see P11A for more info on hard-headed Dawn). (jj) |

NEW! Raven Dawn This A11A is commonly mistaken for a Blue-eyed Angie because of her raven hair, but head mold and features are clearly Dawn. Raven Dawn can be thickly rooted or sparsely rooted. Her hair color matches that of Angie. I have never seen a hard-headed Raven Dawn. NOTE: I have seen several of these dolls in person. They are mostly found in the UK. They are not reroots. Since rerooting has now become so common with Dawn, please verify the authenticity of any Raven Dawn you may be interested in purchasing. |

Mold number K11A has an oval face and medium coloring. The lip color is usually dark pink. The rooted hair is of average thickness. K11's are typically on Hong Kong bodies. This mold has been found in hard vinyl as well. It is possible hard heads are present in all head molds. But only with Dawn and Angie. (jj) |

Mold number P11A is shown here both as a smaller, hard head and a soft textured normal sized head. A side-by-side comparison photo is shown below. The hard head is thickly rooted with hair and the size is very close to that of a Mattel Rockflower doll. When you squeeze a soft head, it is pliable and compresses. When a hard head is squeezed, it does not change shape and feels solid. Coloring on the hard head is vivid and lip color is peach. Coloring on the soft head is similar to K11A.

This P11A hard head is on a Hong Kong majorette body. | |

Mold number S11A is, I believe, the most unique. The vinyl in the head and legs is shiny. The coloring is bright, featuring heavy black upper eye liner and the most lustrous lashes. |
